Paroma Chatterjee: Ace DJ & Fashion Icon

DJ Paroma as she is better known as in the Music and Fashion Circuit was selected as Air Hostess by a reputed airline after she did her diploma in Hospitality and Aviation. After working for almost 5 years, she took the plunge into the world of music.

With over 800 gigs in last 5 years, DJ Paroma has come a long way. She is the brand ambassador for 3 fashion brands V-MODA, UDG GEAR and New Balance. Not only that but she has steadily become one to watch for her ever-evolving and immaculate approach to her style and image.

Fashgroupe recently got a chance to interact with her, excerpts:-

You got into DJ’ing at quite a young age, how did it all begin for you and what made you pursue this career?

Well, I wasn’t quite young when I got into DJ’ing actually. I was almost hitting 24!! We now have kids becoming DJ’s at even 10 or 11 ! The realization of not immersing yourself into a job that you are compelled for and to not want to be under anyone, led me to take my passion to a whole new level. I always had my ears to music and my feet to dancing. I never started it off with an intention of making it my career. I gave myself a deadline of 2 years and it all went rolling smooth.

Who are your musical influences and what is the inspiration behind your sound?

So my inspirations are not just DJ’s. I get inspired from anyone and everyone. But if you ask me specifically music related DJ;s like Armin Van Buuren and Nucleya, Pianist Raashi Kulkarni, Musicians right from Michael Jackson and Madonna to Kishore Kumar and R.D. Burman to a lot many percussionists. So, the influences aren’t really restricted 🙂

What would you be doing if you weren’t DJ’ing and producing?

I honestly have no clue.. And I don’t even want to figure that out. Hahaha ! I am someone who takes each day as it comes and DJ’ing also somewhat happened in the same way. I don’t like to make any plans and walk a path of preconception. All I know is whatever I would be, it would have been destined and I would try and give my everything to it.

What advice would you give young women who want to make it as a DJ?

I would certainly want them to start DJ’ing knowing the basic ground level techniques on the console. Software in many ways are being misused as I feel they should be used for convenience and not because you won’t have to learn DJ’ing only because it can mix for you ! And this goes to all, not just women

How and when did you start getting interested in fashion?

I was always a tom boy in my school, not least bothered about my clothing, make up, hair or style. Girls focusing on all of this, very often used to irritate me. Once I joined the airline, grooming, make up, hair care and personality development were a part of the course. And in the outside world, I figured being an air hostess then was a big deal. Gradually, I somewhat started taking a little interest in fashion. but it was surely at the peak once I became a DJ. Even now, when I look at pictures from earlier days of DJ’ing, I used to look so different. I guess, your style needs to continue being updated just as your music 😀

What are some of your favourite style icons? Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?

I haven’t really been inspired by anyone when it came to fashion or rather never paid much of attention to check out who wears what as I think fashion should be very indigenous. Also, one must know that there is a very thin line between copying someone and being inspired. Having said that, I really admire Amitabh Bachhan ji, Victoria Beckham, Beyonce, etc quite a lot 🙂

What are some of your favourite fashion brands?

There are many.. To name a few, Tom Ford, Carolina Herrera, Salvatore Ferragamo, Michael Kors, etc. But I am not always a brand conscious. I feel at times, even the street side shopping can look great. After all, it all depends on how you carry them.

Can you describe your personal style in a sentence?

Comfortable to sleep and travel, chic and glamorous to perform and absolutely simple to stay in at home!! I thankfully have a complexion and a body that helps me pull off almost anything (at least for now. Haha!)

And lastly, what is your favorite place to perform in the world and why?

I can’t think of just one city when it comes to my favorite. Dubai, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Bangalore, Hyderabad, etc.I think me and my music are more connected to these cities. Though I have no complains from the others and I do genuinely enjoy others too, but everyone has some favorites, right ?
