Beyoncé and Balmain’s collaborative collection inspired by her Coachella looks is here! The collection comprises of the pink and yellow sweatshirts Beyoncé wore on stage at the 2018 Coachella. The sorority-inspired black T-shirts are priced at $295 while the BAK- lettered sweatshirts and cropped hoodies range from $595 to $1700.
Back in April, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter delivered a historic performance at Coachella as she became the first black woman to headline the music festival. To mark the historic day, the entire 26-song set was personified by the black experience and culture. Beyoncé and the entire crew wore Pink and Yellow sweatshirts that were custom-designed by Balmain, a French luxury fashion house.
“When she saw all the dancers loving the outfit – and she was loving her own outfit – she realized that what we were creating on stage for her, for all the dancers, was something really impactful,” says Olivier Rousteing, the 32-year-old creative director of Balmain. The capsule collection reflects the legacy and signature styles of over 100 America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities, known as the HBCU.
“Sometimes, you create a moment, and it’s just one moment,” says Rousteing.
All proceeds from the Beyoncé x Balmain collection will benefit the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the largest minority education organisation in the USA. Through advocacy, scholarships and financial assistance, the UNCF works to ensure that Americans of all races, backgrounds and ethnicities are able to attend college and graduate.
Rousteing, an orphan during the early stages of his life, recounts the importance of the message – “I am black and my parents are white. I grew up in France without having a real identification of being black and being an adult. I couldn’t see myself in the future, in a way, because there were not so many people in the ’80s or early ’90s that could show me a direction. For me, working with Beyoncé, it’s more than only music. It’s about history.”
